(KRON) — Free to the public, this weekend’s Wings Over Solano Airshow is announcing Vicky Benzing as their most recent guest headliner. Known for her low loops and rolls, Benzing joins the airshow with her popular bright red Stearman pictured below.
Joining Benzing as the airshow’s headliners will be the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy’s world-famous air demonstration squadron.
Benzing is a pilot, skydiver, aerobatic performer, and air racer with nearly 10,000 hours of flight time and over 1,300 parachute jumps. With her combined flight experience, Benzing has spent over a year of her life in a plane.
A trainer by design, Vicky’s Stearman is reported to have trained hundreds of pilots to fly during World War II. Due to the most recent pilot shortage, California Aeronautical University (CAU), the airshow organizers, have teamed up with Benzing to help expose more young people to the aviation world.
“Learning to fly absolutely changed my life,” says Benzing. “It’s such a confidence builder for young people. There are so many different facets to the aviation world that the career opportunities are almost unlimited, especially today. It’s a very exciting time in the aviation industry.”
Benzing was named rookie of the year during her first year of racing and became the fastest woman at Reno in 2015 with a qualification speed of 469.831 MPH, making her the fastest woman ever at the national championship air races.
Benzing is the only woman to have raced in three classes (Sport, Jet, and Unlimited) at the National Championship Air Races, and one of only two active Stearman demonstration pilots in the U.S.
Free to the public, the air show also features static displays of aircraft, demonstrations from the F-22 Raptor Demo Team and the Red Bull parachute team, and a family fun zone that includes bounce houses, a rock wall, and paintball. Gates for the two-day event open at 9 a.m. on March 16.
